INTRODUCTION:
This position is located in the Fitness Branch, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department, within the Fleet and Family Readiness Division, Commander, Navy Region Hawaii. The Supervisory Fitness has oversight in operating and maintaining a fitness facilities complex within PMRF, Navy Region Hawaii.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Serves as a Supervisory Recreation Specialist responsible for the Fitness Center Complex, Aquatics Center & Sports program providing oversight for various programs and equipment designed to satisfy the needs and interest of members of the military community. Manages and conducts the daily operations of the facilities and coordinates with appropriate personnel to ensure an effective and smooth running facility.
- Directs all Fitness, Sports, & Aquatics programs, services and equipment to include cardio equipment, weight assisted machines, free weight, fitness equipment and towel issue, fitness equipment training, organized classes, group fitness training, fitness assessment, outdoor indoor and outdoor exercise areas, locker rooms, and program registration. Assist military units in organizing and conducting individual and group physical training and conditioning programs. Evaluates the effectiveness of on-going programs from the stand point of participant response, resources, unforeseen developments, and program developments. Provides budget input to supervisor.
- Supervises multiple Recreation Aids, Recreation Assistants, and Lifeguards. Carries out supervisory personnel management responsibilities. Prepares work scheduled for subordinates. Provides on the job instruction and work related guidance to employees. Assigns and reviews work of subordinates. Develops performance requirements for subordinates. Periodically counsel employees on performance in relation to such requirements and, as appropriate, and initiates formal actions ranging from nominations for performance awards to separations. Prepares formal performance evaluations. Approves and disapproves leave request. Hears and attempts to resolve individual and group grievances.
- Serves as property custodian and is accountable for programs property and equipment. Maintains custody receipts, requisitions supplies and equipment, conducts inventories, and submits equipment transfer and disposal receipts as necessary. Directs personnel conducting physical training and conditioning programs as well as advising them of appropriate procedures for daily clean up and maintenance of the facilities and equipment. Prepare reports, operating procedures, task lists, etc.as required.
- Conducts reviews and studies to determine participant satisfaction with current programs and their desires for new programs. Based on findings, makes recommendations to improve current programs or recommends new programs to ensure success in the Fitness Center. Conducts group exercise classes as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
Knowledge of the basic principles and techniques of fitness, sports, Aquatics or recreation as would be acquired through a four-year undergraduate course or through three years of relative experience which enables the incumbent to apply the principles, concepts, and techniques of sport administration for a military community.
Skill in dealing with people and knowledge of human relations sufficient to effectively perform supervisory duties such as counsel employees, develop performance standards and appraise employee performance, assign and direct work to subordinates, resolve employee complaints, etc.
Ability to guide the physical activities of individuals and groups with varying degrees of fitness skill and ability.
Knowledge of fitness activities sufficient to understand the physical and psychological effects of sports activity in order to recognize the needs, physical capabilities, and physical limitations of program participants and to develop, adapt, modify, expand, or otherwise change specific fitness programs and/or schedule activities.
Knowledge of range of sports, fitness or Aquatics activities and services, of participants interests and needs, and of the methods and processes involved in a basic Navy Fitness program to plan and implement various fitness center programs for moderately large military community participant population.
Ability to determine and justify the funds, supplies and equipment needed to carry out a diversified fitness center program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
A bachelor’s degree in Fitness, Recreation or related field or three (3) years of focused experience in fitness or recreation is required.
