I. INTRODUCTION:
This position is located in the Auto Hobby Shop, Morale Welfare and Recreation Department of the Quality of Life Division. The primary purpose of this position is to issue, receive, check and store tools and equipment related to the repair and maintenance service of vehicles.
II. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Performs clear and specific receiving, storing and issuance assignments of tools, equipment and shop work areas.
- Assists with resale purchase requirements, pricing, stocking and control of all merchandise resale items.
- Operates a computerized point of sale system for inventory control and management.
- Performs housekeeping tasks to ensure proper standards of appearance, cleanliness and safety of assigned spaces.
- Performs minor repairs requiring simple hand tools.
III. SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of marked tools and parts to be able to compare data on items to identifying data in documents and at storage locations.
- Knowledge of documentation requirements pertaining to issuance and turn-in of tools and parts.
- Knowledge of basic inventory practices to be able to assist in stock control.
- Knowledge of automated and/or mechanized systems sufficient to scan bar codes, enter and extract automated information and operate point of sale system.
- Knowledge of basic sanitation requirements.
- Ability to perform minor repairs and servicing.
- Ability to provide quality customer services.
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
IV. RESPONSIBILITY:
Works under direct supervision of the MW Director who provides general guidance on repetitive assignments. Supervisor provides additional guidance/instructions on new operations or procedures. Work is periodically spot-checked by the supervisor or higher graded employee to insure adherence to procedures and objectives. Employee is responsible for observing all safety, environmental and security procedures.
V. PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Employee works on hard surfaces and in work areas that require standing, stooping, bending and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries weights up to 10 pounds. May occasionally handle items weighing up to 40 pounds. May lift heavier items with weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers.
VI. WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is generally done in areas that are well lighted, heated and ventilated. Employee may occasionally work in areas that are drafty. The work is sometimes dirty, dusty and greasy. The employee is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes and bruises.
VII. OTHER REOUIREMENTS:
Travel is not required for this position.
Position is not telework eligible.
*The incumbent will be promoted to Automotive Helper upon completion of the Automotive Service Excellence Certification.*
AUTOMOTIVE HELPER (NA-5823-05)
Summary of Duties: Assists automotive mechanics in performance of maintenance and repair on all combustion powered vehicles. Helps with repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, adjusting, or cleaning defective parts or components such as fouled spark plugs, worn brakeshoes, water pumps, engine gaskets belts and hoses, etc. Under the direct supervision of the automotive mechanic or higher grade worker, removes and replaces with standard parts, items such as spark plugs, fan belts, starters, carburetors, fuel pumps, water pumps, mufflers, tail pipes, etc. Assists in making settings and adjustments such as setting distributor and voltage regulator points, gaping spark plugs, setting engine idle and time, and taking up on brakes. May assist higher grade mechanics and workers in making service calls. May be required to operate a light truck or van to answer trouble calls or transport men and materials to and from jobs. May assists with use of on-board computers and electronic analyzers to help diagnose problems with automatic computer control systems and emission systems. May perform maintenance on lawn cutting equipment, such as cleaning filters, spark plugs and sharpening blades. Observes environmental, safety and security rules and regulations. Performs other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have knowledge of marked tools and parts so as to be able to compare data on items to identifying data in documents and at storage locations. Applicant must have knowledge of documentation requirements pertaining to the issuance and turn-in of tools and parts. Must have basic knowledge of inventory practices to assist in stock control, knowledge of automated and/or mechanized systems sufficient to scan bar codes, enter and extract automated information and operate a point of sale system. Applicant must be able to perform minor serving repairs, provide quality customer service. Must possess basic math skills and knowledge of sanitation requirements.
